MHSDS (the Mental Health Services Data Set) is the record every NHS-funded secondary mental health, learning disability and autism service in England submits each month — community mental health teams, crisis and home treatment, children and young people’s services, memory clinics, perinatal teams and inpatient wards. It does not include NHS Talking Therapies (the former IAPT service), which is published separately, or care given only in general practice. Figures are attributed to the sub-ICB of the patient’s GP practice, so this page shows what happens to your registered patients, whichever provider they use.
Sub-ICB (area)
The former CCG footprint within an ICB — the smallest geography published. Nothing is published for individual practices or PCNs.
Provider
Any organisation submitting to MHSDS: NHS mental health trusts and hundreds of independent and voluntary-sector services. Provider figures cover the whole organisation across every area it serves; the only published link to an area is the children and young people access split.
In contact with services
People with an open referral to any service at the end of the month — the caseload.
New referrals
Referrals that started in the month, from any source (GP, self-referral, A&E, schools and so on).
Missed contacts (DNA)
Appointments recorded as not attended, as a share of attended plus missed contacts.
Per 1,000 patients
Counts divided by the area’s registered GP population (latest list size, all ages), so areas of different size can be compared.
12-month access measures
NHS England’s headline access counts are rolling 12-month totals of people seen at least once (or, for adult community services, twice). They move slowly and are compared per 1,000 patients.
72-hour follow-up
Share of people discharged from an adult acute mental health bed who were contacted within 72 hours — the period of highest suicide risk. National standard 80%.
Clock stop (community waits)
The NHS’s community mental health waiting-time measure: the clock stops when someone has been assessed and started meaningful help. The aim is within four weeks.
90th percentile wait
Nine in ten people waited no longer than this; one in ten waited longer.
Suppressed (—)
NHS England rounds counts to the nearest 5 and withholds values under 5. Sums for an ICB can therefore run a few units low, and small services in small areas show as “—”.
Performance data
These are the first-cut “performance” figures published about six weeks after the month. NHS England later finalises them; small revisions are normal.
Data source
NHS England, Mental Health Services Monthly Statistics, published monthly.
Counts are attributed to the sub-ICB of the patient’s GP practice (or residence where no practice is recorded). Rates use the latest registered list size for every month. An “—” means NHS England suppressed the value (under 5) or the measure is not published for that area. Click a row to open that area.

Providers are every organisation submitting to MHSDS — NHS trusts, independent and voluntary-sector services (marked). The link between a provider and an area comes only from the published under-18 and 18–24 access splits, so “0–24s from this area” is the one column specific to the selected area (adult-only providers serving the area cannot be identified); every other column is the provider’s whole-organisation figure across all the areas it serves. Provider rows are suppressed by NHS England when under 5, so small services show “—”. Click a row or bar to open that provider.
Measure
Every month held is shown (up to three years). Some measures were added to the national publication part-way through the series and start later. Referral flow: referrals starting in the month against people discharged from a referral, with the open caseload at the month end on the right-hand axis.

Service lines as published by NHS England; not every service publishes every column. Adult community services for severe mental illness are the core teams GPs refer into for psychosis, bipolar disorder and other severe illness; memory services carry the dementia assessment pathway. Year ago
Access counts are rolling 12-month totals, shown per 1,000 registered patients (all ages) so areas and England compare like for like. Waiting-time measures with small numbers (crisis, eating disorders, early intervention) are frequently suppressed at sub-ICB level — use the ICB view for those. Green marks a value better than England (or a met standard), red worse. Hover a measure for its definition.
Source: NHS England, Mental Health Services Monthly Statistics (Mental Health Services Data Set, performance data, published ~6 weeks in arrears). Figures are attributed to the sub-ICB of the patient’s GP practice or residence. ICB figures sum the ICB’s current sub-ICBs, so history stays comparable across the 2026 ICB mergers; suppressed small numbers drop out of those sums. Rates per 1,000 use the latest registered list size (NHS England patients registered at a GP practice). NHS Talking Therapies are not included.
New: Mental Health Services in Your Area — what happens to your patients after a mental health referral. People in contact with secondary mental health services, new and open referrals, missed contacts, children’s and adult community access, perinatal access, 72-hour follow-up after discharge, crisis response and the community waiting-time standards for every sub-ICB and ICB in England, each against England and per 1,000 registered patients. A Providers tab compares the mental health trusts and independent providers that see your area’s patients — caseload, referrals, missed contacts, access and waits — and you can open any provider on its own. Three years of monthly MHSDS data, refreshed automatically. Open the dashboard.
New: Find a GP near me — how patients will see your practice — a public page where anyone can enter a postcode and compare the practices that cover it side by side: GP Patient Survey, phone-system waits and abandonment, same-day access, continuity, blood pressure and diabetes control, screening, vaccination and CQC rating, each against England, ranked by an overall score. Put your own postcode in and see how you look next to your neighbours — and share it with your PPG. Open Find a GP · read the guide for patients.
New: Hospital Waiting Times by Trust & Specialty — consultant-led RTT waiting times for every NHS trust and independent provider in England. Compare median waits, 18-week performance and 52-week waits across the providers in your ICB for any specialty — evidence for “where should I refer?” conversations with patients. Three years of monthly data, refreshed automatically. Open the dashboard.
NHS App data updated to July 2026 — and your uptake figure may have shifted. NHS Digital has restated its NHS App registration counts: registrations are now counted against each patient’s current practice (previously they could stay attributed to a former practice). From June 2026 onwards your practice’s uptake percentage may therefore step up or down compared with earlier months. This reflects a correction in the national source data, not a real change in how many of your patients use the app — England’s overall total is unchanged. Open the NHS App dashboard.
New: NHS Payments to General Practice — every NHS payment stream to every GP practice in England (global sum, QOF, premises and more) from NHS England’s annual publication, benchmarked per weighted patient against the England median — green above, red below — with trends since 2022-23 and PCN, sub-ICB and similar-practice comparison. Open the dashboard.
New: Policy & Contract Library — the key NHS England, DHSC and legislation.gov.uk documents for general practice and PCNs in one organised place: the 2026/27 GP contract, Network Contract DES, QOF, ARRS, premises, digital and access guidance — every link verified weekly, with pointers to the Arjus dashboard that helps you act on each. Open the library.
New: Prescribing Dashboard — nine prescribing measures for every GP practice in England (antibiotics, opioids, dependence-forming medicines, cost and more), trended over nearly four years against national centile bands, with PCN and ICB peer comparison. Data to April 2026, refreshed monthly. Open the dashboard.
New: Vaccinations & Immunisations — childhood vaccination coverage (UKHSA COVER) for every practice against the 95% national ambition, with catch-up counts (“children to reach 95%”), coverage trends and peer comparison.
